Re-Design of Daisy Jones and The Six

Project Overview:

I chose to create a limited edition re-design of the book Daisy Jones & The Six to give it a grungier, rock’n’roll feel. I wanted the new design to balance the heavier intrinsic life lessons of the 70s with its rock’n’roll aesthetics. This project entailed cleaning a text file, text design and producing a physical copy of the book from print to casing in.
Ideation:

To begin I chose a color scheme that felt reminiscent of edgy rock’n’roll and the temptations and addictions that follow suit with the lifestyle. I planned to keep the book block and cover designs grayscale with black and white, but include burgundy  as an accent color in both the end sheets and headband.
I used Adobe InDesign to layout my book pages. I chose a simple and distinguished body copy font, Adobe Garamond Pro, that felt mature and clean, to contrasting the details in the chapter titles and tip-in sheets I had in mind. I wanted my chapter title pages to have a whimsical seventies font. I chose BookmanJFPro with its beautiful swash characters that I later hand nested in Adobe Illustrator to create interest in the flow of the text.
Layout Iterations:

I went through several different iterations of my chapter openers and front matter layout of my book. Below are several early iterations of my layouts until I decided on my final typefaces and alignment.
Book Making Process Shots:

I created a physical version of my limited edition redesign by hand. I sewed my book block, tipped-in my end sheets, and cased in my book. The process required a lot of patience and attention to detail. Below are photos of the book making process.
Tip-Ins and Cover Design:

I added tip-in sheets between each chapter to break up the sections of the book more distinctly. I designed all iterations of my tip-in sheets using Adobe Illustrator. The tip-ins were originally a collage of tickets, alluding to (rock’n’roll) concerts. While I tried the collage in both black and white and color, in the end, I felt it was too newspaper-like in black and white and too vibrant in color. I decided to pivot my design to be a pattern of music/rock’n’roll imagery. The design includes free-form shapes, instruments, a radio, lips blowing smoke, etc.
For the book cover, I chose a simple black material to remain consistent with the color palette and a silver decorative electric guitar to contrast. I chose to keep the cover minimal to emphasize the beauty of the book construction and what lies inside. The guitar was selected from the graphic elements on my tip-in sheets to foreshadow what is to come.
